Freeman's Place Leisure Centre, Durham

The works will comprise of basement plant rooms, a main 25m swimming pool and learner pool with ground level suspended and ground bearing slabs to entrance lobbies. Suspended first and lower roof floor slabs with transfer beams will provide a changing village and fitness suite and a mezzanine slab on metal decking including lift and stair cores all enclosed by curved and raking R.C. walls up to 9m high, will result in exposed aesthetic architectural features.

The site is low lying and adjacent to the River Wear and requires a well point system that is being installed by the Main Contractor. Interestingly the waterproofing to the structure below ground level is being achieved by using high cement content and rebar density in the concrete.

The pool walls will be formed using the Peri Trio system but require significant timber make ups to produce an intricate head detail involving chamfers, rebates and box-outs forming features and spillways. The curved walls will be constructed using Peri Vario panels that include board pattern layout to the finished concrete walls.

With the inclusion of feature steelwork and a variety of finishes to internal walls and roofs will provide an interesting and imposing signature building in Durham City Centre.
